"Protection of personal data in the European Union" organized by the Judicial Academy, the Academy of European Law (ERA) and the Bar Association of Serbia

The Judicial Academy, in cooperation with the Academy for European Law (ERA) and the Bar Association of Serbia, organized a one-day seminar on "Protection of personal data in the European Union" in Belgrade on November 5. The seminar gathered judges of basic courts and lawyers.

The seminar was opened by the head of the Training Department for Special Types of Law at the Judicial Academy, Marija Milaković, and the administrator of the European Public Law course at the Academy of European Law, Martina Hulok. 

They emphasized that the aim of the seminar is to provide an overview of the legal framework of European data protection law, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Law Enforcement Data Protection Directive (LED), as well as related EU digital legislation. Key national solutions and case law will also be presented, highlighting the role of national courts in the implementation of the GDPR. The program will also deal with the jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in the field of privacy, data protection and artificial intelligence.

The key topics covered at the seminar were:
•    Main features of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Law Enforcement Directive (LED)
•    Legal framework of EU law on data protection and digitization
•    Key national provisions and their application in judicial practice
•    Key national judgments in the field of data protection
•    Key jurisprudence of the Court of Justice of the European Union regarding privacy and data protection
•    The latest jurisprudence of the EU Court of Justice in the field of privacy, data protection and artificial intelligence

The lecturers at the seminar were:
•    Margarita Akritidou, Legal Officer, Litigation and International Affairs Division, European Data Protection Board (EDPB)
•    Alessandro Mantelero, Associate Professor of Private Law and Law and Technology at the Polytechnic University of Turin, holder of the Jean Monnet Chair for Mediterranean Society and Digital Law
•    Dr. Dragica Popescu, retired judge, Court of Appeal of the Republic of Serbia, permanent lecturer at the Judicial Academy
•    Nele Sitam, Judge, Supreme Court of Estonia, Tartu
